Our approved IPAF Harness Awareness (HA), Harness User (HU) and Harness Inspection (HI) Training courses is the all-in-one course that covers everyone who is responsible for safe use of harnesses and lanyards including using, inspecting and maintaining inspection records within an organisation.

This three stage course includes the awareness and user course content to ensure that those people responsible for inspecting and recording inspections, are fully aware and understand the importance of a harness and lanyard, as well as how to correctly use them during the course of completing work.

This full day course starts with the theory based and hands-on usage training followed by the specific enhanced training to the knowledge of the attendee how to correctly carry out harness and lanyard inspections and then demonstrating the appropriate method of maintaining records for every harness in the company.

Attendees will learn:

Harness Awareness (HA) Content.

  • Enhanced awareness in the identification of the correct type of harness and lanyard to provide personal fall protection for MEWP operators.
  • An understanding of checking, using and maintaining harnesses and lanyards and how to store them appropriately to manufacturers guidance.
  • Knowledge of how harnesses and lanyards should be fitted and adjusted including attachment to anchor points on access equipment.

Harness User (HU) Content.

  • Practical demonstration of checks to harness and lanyard prior to being used.
  • Demonstrate how to fit and adjust harnesses and lanyards for use in cherry pickers and scissor lifts.
  • Show how to attach a harness to the correct anchor point of a MEWP and adjust the lanyard to ensure effective restraint

Harness Inspection (HI) Content.

Course Aims.

The IPAF Harness Awareness (HA), Harness User (HU) and Harness Inspection (HI) training course provides a complete overview of how harnesses and lanyards should be used in conjunction with mobile elevating working platforms (MEWPs).

The course consists of the theory based awareness content and assessment followed by the practical and hands-on usage of harnesses and lanyards. The final part of the course covers how to inspect the equipment and record appropriately for compliance purposes. The training can be carried out at our Torrington Avenue Training Centre in Coventry. Alternatively, the harness awareness (HA) element can be completed online before attending the practical in-centre training.

Once successfully complete the attendee will be able to demonstrate their full understanding around the usage of harnesses and lanyards as well as how to inspect and record that the equipment remains compliant.

Harness User (HU) Practical Assessment

After completing the Awareness training, the Harness User practical assessment tests the attendees ability to demonstrate the learning outcomes from the theoretical part of the course.

The IPAF Harness User (HU) practical section includes:
  1. Pre-use checks of a harness and lanyard
  2. Fitment and adjusting harnesses and lanyards for use in access platforms.
  3. Identifying suitable anchor points on cherry pickers, scissor lifts and boom lifts.
  4. Adjustment of the lanyard to provide effective restraint.

Practical
  • Harness and Lanyard Inspection

Final Written Assessment
  • 10 question, open book, written test.
A pass result requires a score of at least 80% (8/10)
Final Practical Assessment:
Carry out the inspection of:
  • 2 harnesses
  • 2 Lanyards or SRLs
  • 2 Connectors
This is assessed by an IPAF approved Instructor and will be marked as correct or incorrect.

IPAF Qualifications

After the successful completion of both parts of the Harness Awareness (HA) and Harness User (HU) course elements, the delegate will be able to demonstrate their full understanding of both the theoretical element and practical requirements of the course.

The relevant qualifications will be transferred onto each applicants digital Powered Access Licence (ePAL). This can be downloaded and viewed on the IPAF App which is available from your chosen app store.
