We are the largest independent supplier of quality hire equipment for all industries. Our centrally based Midlands Plant Hire service covers Coventry and Warwickshire and surrounding areas, all under one roof. Our roots go back over 50 years and a little of our history is below.
Clements Midlands plant hire was established in 1965 as a transport company by Fred Clements. In 1967 the company was acquired by a local long-established building contractor and property developer – GW Deeley Ltd. The company was transformed into being the Deeley in-house transport and plant supplier. Over time the product portfolio transformed and developed and a significant change was undertaken in the early 1980’s to start hiring equipment outside the Deeley Group and to secure business from external sources. To further this, the acquisition of a well-known independent tool hire company in Rugby – Alljay Tool Hire was made in 1990 and the Alljay owner – John Jennings joined the combined company (called Clements Alljay) as Managing Director. John had extensive experience of the UK Hire market as he was one of the original founding members of the Hire Association of Europe (HAE); the highly respected industry body for the Hire industry.
The aim of the business was to offer a quality product and an exceptional Midlands plant hire service to cover Coventry and the surrounding area. In 1996 the further acquisition of Thumb-a-Lift Ltd, a small independent Leamington Spa-based Access Equipment hire company brought Clements into the growing Mobile Aerial Work Platform (MEWP) rental market. During the 90’s and into the new Millennium the business developed and grew. The name of the company changed to Clements Plant & Tool Hire Ltd to better represent its product portfolio and the company continued consolidating its reputation for supplying

quality equipment in the local area. However, the method of construction within the Deeley Group had changed significantly and Clements was no-longer a core business to the Group. Subsequently, local man – Jim Longstaff (who had been a supplier of equipment to Clements for a number of years), approached the Deeley Group about possibly acquiring it and taking it independent. This was completed alongside John Jennings through a newly formed holding company – Alljay Holdings Ltd. Subsequently, John became the Chairman and Jim the Managing Director.
We have continued to invest in new equipment and to listen to customer demands and requirements and we constantly adapt our portfolio and service to fit the needs of our ever-expanding customer base.
John retired in 2015 and Jim was joined by Managing Director Adrian Hutchinson as a shareholder. They are ably assisted by Rachel Canning as Finance Director.
At Clements we pride ourselves that we are a specialist independent Hirer of all types of contractor’s plant and access equipment as well as a wide range of power tools. We have a depth of experience in solving problems by having assembled one of the widest varieties of specialist Midlands plant hire skills and knowledge.
This coupled with the vast experience of our staff, the longest serving of which has been with the business over 40 years, enables Clements to provide an unrivalled service. All classes of business are catered for including the keen DIY’er and many of our trade customers have established a partnership with us that spans two generations.
